Application for vice-regal patronage

Overview

Organisations seeking vice-regal patronage must apply to the Governor-General, with patronage normally lasting for the duration of the Governor-General’s term of office. 

Patronage applications are now open but decisions will not be made until the new Governor-General's term begins in 2027.

This form can be used to guide organisations thinking about vice-regal patronage through what is required. You can save the form at any stage and come back to finish it later.

Term of patronage

• Patronage, if granted, applies only for the duration of a Governor-General’s term.
• Applications are not usually considered during the final year of that term.
• Patronage does not automatically transfer to a successor; organisations must reapply when a new Governor-General is appointed.

Eligibility criteria

Organisations should:

• Be at least five years established.
• Have a strong and credible record of achievement.
• Operate at a national level.
• Be recognised as leading in their field and contribute meaningfully to the wellbeing or interests of New Zealanders.

Patronage applies only to the national body, not to regional branches or affiliated groups.

Organisational requirements

• The organisation must be non-commercial in nature.
• It should demonstrate financial stability.
• The Governor-General will not hold a constitutional role within the organisation.
• The Governor-General’s name and position must not be used for fundraising purposes.

Alignment with Government House objectives

The organisation’s purpose and activities should align with the Government House objective:

“The office of the Governor-General is strengthened as a symbol of national unity and leadership.”

Engagement expectations

Applications should clearly outline expectations of the Governor-General’s involvement, including:

• Attendance at events or meetings
• Provision of messages
• Speaking engagements
• Support in raising the organisation’s public profile

Supporting information

Organisations should provide the name and contact details of a relevant authority (such as a local or central government body, or recognised sector organisation) that Government House may consult to verify the organisation’s work and standing.

Organisations will also need to provide the following supporting documents:

1. Constitution/Trust Deed
2. Most recent Annual Report
3. Strategic or business plan
4. Financial statements for the last 3 years
